The events of yesterday — the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the resulting reactions from the left and right — have left me desirous once again of a life in which I am not so “connected” to the politics of America.
I hear you and feel the same way. Sometimes we need to step aside. It's heartbreaking what's happening to our country. This death should never have happened, nor the deaths in Minnesota, and at all the schools, and in Gaza and Ukraine. Sometimes all the needless, senseless deaths pulls you into a pool of despair, and you have to find a way to pull yourself out of that, to not allow it to keep you from seeing all the good going on at the very same time that rarely makes the news.
Yes, I feel the same way too. For a while--when Obama was elected--i thought we'd turned a corner and were on our way to becoming what we'd always dreamed we could be, America's dream fulfilled. But instead, with the backlash, it became an ugly turn backward.
I so understand how you feel. It's all surreal. He was only 31 years-old. I wasn't thrilled with his rhetoric, but gunning him down for it leaves me speechless.
You mentioned the events of 1968. Just today after mentioning it to a friend, sent him a copy of the Mark Kulansky book of the same name. As upsetting a read that it is, it did turn a corner eventually. We can only hope this will too.
Right now New York City where I live is under siege. ICE is here like the gestapo. sigh
Yes we are.

I feel like all of the “progress” that has been made over the last 50 years or so is being ripped away.

Agreed. Obama’s election produced the exact opposite result of what we hoped had happened.

We are living in a very dark time.
